3.4 million over-75s in the UK don’t have a Power of Attorney

By JUST

In Just’s latest research - Countdown to Retirement series2- we discovered that a worryingly high proportion of older retirees have not yet organised a Power of Attorney (POA).

This presents a great opportunity for you as advisers and brokers to talk to any of your clients in this position, to help safeguard their interests should they fall ill or lose mental capacity.

The research also revealed that:

  • Over a third of those over 75s said they didn’t think it was appropriate at their age as they didn’t feel they were yet at the appropriate stage of life.
  • Many say they are deterred by fear of relinquishing control of their finances (22%).
  • Shockingly, 15% expressed no intention to arrange a Power of Attorney, while 8% were unaware of its importance.
